An attempt to modernize China's economy so, by 1988, they would be rivaling America
Mao toured China an concluded that the Chinese were capable of anything, so the two things they would target was industry and agriculture
Farms combined into
communes
of 30 thousand people
Commune had all that was needed- entertainment, and soldiers worked alongside the people
Twelve familes formed a work team, twelve work teams formed a brigade, each with specific work to do
Classless society
"Hard work for a few years, happiness for thousands"
It was a disaster, food production went down, 15 million people died from disease and starvation
Floods and droughts in China in 1959, not enough grain and rice produced
1960 government broke up communes and made collective farms and private plots
